Private, time-smart itineraries for a Panama City layover, a one-day stopover or a two-day stay, built around the canal, Casco Viejo and great food.

Panama’s Tocumen International Airport is one of the main connecting hubs of the Americas, and Copa Airlines’ stopover program lets many travelers add a stay in Panama to their ticket at no extra airfare (since 2026, for up to 15 days; check current conditions when booking). Here is how to turn a Panama stopover into one of the highlights of your trip. For booking details, see our Copa stopover guide.
Before you leave the airport
Entry requirements: check Panama’s current entry rules for your nationality before you fly.
Luggage: if you’re connecting on the same ticket, ask whether your bags can be checked through to your final destination.
Transport: Tocumen is roughly 30–45 minutes from the city center without traffic, and much longer at rush hour. A pre-arranged private driver saves time and stress.
If you have 8–10 hours (a long layover)
With a long layover, focus on the two things you can’t see anywhere else. Our half-day stopover experience is designed for this:
Panama Canal: see a ship move through the locks.
Casco Viejo: a short walk through the old town and a meal with a view of the skyline.
Back to Tocumen with a comfortable buffer before check-in.
If you have one full day
Our full-day stopover experience adds more time and depth:
Morning: the Panama Canal, timed around transits.
Late morning: the Amador Causeway for views of the bay and the city.
Afternoon: lunch and a private architectural walk in El Cangrejo or other parts of the city.
Evening: dinner on a rooftop in the old town.
If you have two days
Day one as above. On day two, choose between:
Culture and rainforest: a private Emberá experience, traveling by dugout canoe to an Indigenous community in the forest.
Food and neighborhoods: the Barrio Chino and gastronomy experience, followed by an afternoon in the city’s markets and cafés.
Stopover tips from locals
Start early. Mornings are cooler and traffic is lighter.
Pack for heat and rain. Light clothes, a rain layer and comfortable walking shoes.
Keep it private. On a tight timeline, a private guide and driver let you skip waiting and adjust on the fly.
