From Emberá communities in the rainforest to Guna molas, here's how a respectful visit can help keep Panama's living traditions strong.

Panama is home to seven Indigenous peoples, including the Guna, Emberá, Wounaan, Ngäbe, Buglé, Naso and Bribri, each with its own language, art and way of life. When travel is done well, visitors become a source of income and pride that helps these traditions continue.

Why culture needs more than visitors

Tourism can turn culture into a performance, or it can support the people who keep it alive. The difference is in who designs the visit, who is paid, and how guests behave.

Emberá communities near Panama City

Several Emberá communities live along the rivers of Chagres National Park, about an hour or two from Panama City and reached by dugout canoe. A respectful visit includes time to talk with your hosts, learn about medicinal plants, music and crafts, and share a meal. Our private Emberá experience is designed with the community, at a pace that leaves room for real conversation.

Guna molas and other traditional crafts

The mola, a layered textile sewn by Guna women, is one of Panama’s best-known art forms. Other traditions include Wounaan and Emberá baskets woven from palm fiber, and tagua-nut carvings. Buying directly from the maker is one of the most direct ways to support these traditions; read more about Panama’s local artisans.

How to visit respectfully

  • Ask before taking photos of people.

  • Follow your hosts’ lead on dress, food and customs.

  • Buy crafts directly and avoid bargaining aggressively.

  • Travel in small groups with operators that have long-term relationships with the community.

Beyond Indigenous culture

Panama’s culture is also Afro-Caribbean, Spanish colonial, Chinese and more. A Barrio Chino and gastronomy experience in Casco Antiguo or a Modern Architectural Walk through El Cangrejo shows how many stories share one small country.

Attraveler works directly with communities and local hosts. Plan a culturally rich trip to Panama.
